One man was killed and another injured when guards fired upon a vehicle that tried to run through the National Security Agency's entrance gates near Washington on Monday.
A police officer was also injured, officials said.
The two men, who were dressed in women's clothing, tried to drive a black Ford Escape through an entrance gate at the NSA's Fort Meade, Maryland, headquarters, a senior U.S. official said.
When they were asked to leave the area, barriers were put up and, the car then accelerated toward an NSA Police car blocking the road, ramming it. Officers opened fire when the driver refused to stop.
The motive was not immediately known but officials said there was no evidence the incident was linked to terrorism, Reuters reports.
A man reported his Ford Escape as being stolen from a nearby hotel, and officials have confirmed it was the same car the two men were driving. Cocaine and a gun were later found inside the vehicle. It is believed the men had been at a party at the hotel before the shooting incident.
