At least four people were killed when a fire broke out early Wednesday on an oil platform belonging to Mexico's state petroleum company Petroleos Mexicanos, the company said in a statement.

The Abkatun oil rig platform is located in the Campeche Sound off the Mexican coast near the states of Campeche and Tabasco.

Some 300 people were evacuated from the platform when the blaze erupted, the company — also known as Pemex — posted on Twitter. Pemex added that it was using eight firefighting boats to battle the fire.

The company stated that 16 people were injured in the fire, but a spokesman for emergency services in nearby Ciudad del Carmen said the number was much higher at 45, according to reporting by Reuters.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
