Jamal al-Labani, who was killed in a mortar strike in Yemen last week, is believed to be the first American killed in Yemen, where conflicts between the Houthi minorities and government forces have been worsening.

Houthi fighters have advanced to the Yemeni city of Aden.

Al-Labani was leaving a mosque near his home with his 14-year-old nephew on Tuesday evening when Houthi rebels launched a mortar strike on the road. The pair tried to flee, but were hit by shrapnel.

Two days before his death, al-Labani told family members that he would try to cross the border into Oman and fly to Egypt.

The U.S. has been criticized for failing to evacuate its citizens from Yemen as other countries -- including Russia and China -- have already transported their citizens out of the country.
