New evidence shows that international and national corporations played a major role in backing the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983, in which as many as 30,000 people were killed or forcibly disappeared. The companies implicated include Ford Motor Company and Mercedes Benz, as well as national companies such as the Ledesma agroindustrial company, whose owner Carlos Pedro Blaquier, one of the richest men in Argentina, is strongly associated with the kidnapping, torture, execution and disappearance of workers in his company. Human rights activists say that the country's judiciary ignores the complex network of relations that allowed the state to turn itself into a machine that disappeared people while economic groups became the owners of the nation.
