Turkey launches €10-billion Azeri gas pipeline project

Turkey’s inaugurated a 10-billion euro project to pump Azeri gas to western Europe.
The Trans-Anatolian gas pipeline (TANAP) aims to carry 16 billion cubic metres of gas a year by mid-2018.
The 1,850 km pipeline will stretch from Turkey’s border with Georgia to Greece. Political analysts say it is key to Turkey’s ambition to cut its own dependence on Russian gas.
Facing objections from the EU, Russia abandoned its 40-billion euro South Stream project through which it aimed to deliver gas to Europe while bypassing Ukraine.
Our correspondent Bora Bayraktar says now Turkey plans to establish itself as the energy distribution hub of the region. “This project will not only meet Turkey’s needs, it will also provide an alternative energy route for Europe.”
