hermit crabs gather and wait for an appropriately sized peer to show up before taking part in an odd version of musical chairs known as a “housing chain.” Here, the crabs assemble in a line-up and proceed to quickly scramble, and even battle each other, in order to claim their new homes. Lo and behold, that poor little crab finds himself in a bit of a fixer upper at the end, but that’s better than being homeless. A crab without a shell has a high risk of baking in the hot Caribbean sun.
