Researchers have offered a new perspective on how cold an ice age actually gets. Based on a recent international study, it turns out the last one was so frigid, even emperor penguins had a tough time surviving it. 

Scientists discovered that roughly 20 thousand years ago there were possibly as few as three groups of them. 

Combined, those had an estimated population count approximately 7 times lower than the number existing today.
