Cherry Blossom Festival
Auburn Botanic Gardens and Peacock Gallery, Sydney
Sat 16, Sun 17, Sat 23, Sun 24 August 2014, 11am - 4pm
Japanese Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) bloom once a year for about two weeks, providing a beautiful spectacle, one which attracts many visitors to the gardens. Cherry blossom viewing parties (Hanamis) are very significant events in Japan and having a picnic lunch under a blossoming cherry tree is a popular Japanese tradition.
Visitors are invited to enjoy the cherry blossoms at Auburn’s Japanese Gardens, enjoy the lovely weather outdoors by taking a walk around the gardens including The Rose Garden, and enjoy the variety of musical performances, demonstrations, workshops and activities during the festival.
The Peacock Gallery activities include assorted food and beverage stalls, will showcase the 2014 Auburn Mayoral Art & Photographic Exhibition, host workshops with cherry blossom craft and origami workshops.
The festival has already proven a favourite with enthusiasts of Japanese fashion subcultures such as “cosplay” - a type of performance art in which participants dress in costumes and accessories and play out the character representations.
A free shuttle bus will travel on loop between Auburn Train Station (South Parade) and Auburn Botanic Gardens (Chiswick Road) from 10am-5pm, 16-17 August and 23-24 August.
