Rising acid levels in U.S. waters due to increased carbon dioxide emissions by humans are a threat to shellfish populations and the local economies that rely on them, according to a recent study led by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Global warming is causing oceanic waters to become more acidic which threatens the lives of local shellfish and the economies that rely on them.


A recent study led by the Natural Resources Defense Council has found that the cold waters around the Pacific Northwest and southern Alaska appear to be most at risk and may feel the brunt of effects by as early as 2030, though other vulnerable areas include the north-central West Coast, the gulf of Maine, and parts along the east coast and southern gulf region.
