Mumbai: The Sion hospital had decided to celebrate Mahashivratri in an unique way. Of the few remaining shivpati trees in the city, Sion hospital has three in its premises and the concrete enclosure around are choking the trees. On the auspicious day of Mahashivratri, Dr Suleman Merchant, Dean Sion hospital ordered to remove the concrete enclosure. Dr Merchant told, “The flowers of Kailashpati trees clearly show a Shiv Ling inside. This is an an endangered species, there are only a few left in Mumbai and three are currently in Sion Hospital. The base and roots of the trees at the hospital were badly choked due to concrete enclosure around their base. The fact was verified by a famous environmentalist couple who I had invited to help with landscaping planning for Sion Hospital, the work to free the trees has started.
