Pope Francis, when speaking recently in St. Peter’s Square, characterized the decision to not have children as being ‘selfish’.

He further noted, “Life rejuvenates and acquires energy when it multiplies: It is enriched, not impoverished.”

His address overall concerned youths and the important role they play in culture.

Young generations are, in his eyes, what give hope to communities at large.

He said, “A society with a greedy generation, that doesn’t want to surround itself with children, that considers them above all worrisome, a weight, a risk, is a depressed society.”

The Pontiff also referenced the declining birth rate in Europe, and expressed that the foregoing of raising families is likely what is at the root of so many nations’ unhappiness.

This isn’t the first time the Pope has commented on the trend of people remaining childless.
