It all started at about 4:30 in the evening after firefighters received a report about two children on an ice coated river. One of the kids, a girl, had fallen into the water, however she was able to climb onto rocks and reach the shore before rescuers got to the scene.
The male child, who is about 10 years of age, was standing on a thin layer of ice when firefighters arrived. Two firefighters donned exposure suits and tried to move in the direction of the boy.
The first firefighter fell into neck-high water while the second waded out until the waters of The Bronx River reached his waist. He was able to place a portable ladder above the ice shelf for the boy to safely crawl across after an attempt to throw a safety ring f
