Dr. Roy Hakala of the Minnesota Craniofacial Center, P.C., explains that non-prescription, over-the-counter appliances sold to stop snoring are a bad idea. One kind sold is too bulky, enough so that it may actually crowd the tongue. Since inadequate tongue space is usually part of OSA, these devices can make the problem worse. Soft appliances may have the effect of pushing the upper teeth so out of line that orthodontic care may be required.
