Last Friday, a root canal was performed on a bear at Virginia's Metro Richmond Zoo. Dr. Bruce Overton was tasked with carrying out the surgery on the 9-year-old female Asiatic black bear.

About a third of her left top canine tooth recently broke. The area around the nerve was left open and unprotected.

The root canal was necessary, as had the broken tooth been left uncorrected, a potentially fatal infection might have developed. In preparation for the surgical procedure, a needle was secured to the end of pole so the bear could be sedated.

Once that was done, she was placed onto a trailer and towed via a golf cart, to the zoo’s animal hospital where Overton had set up a dental office. A tube was inserted into her mouth and trachea before Overton could get to work.
