The original Taco Bell could be demolished.
The Downey, CA building that was once home to the first Taco Bell could end up demolished if preservation measures aren’t taken.
A local conservancy group is worried that the vacant building could be bulldozed, as it’s vacant and sitting on a large piece of land that’s likely prime for redevelopment.
Taco Bell, which was begun at that location by founder Glen Bell in 1962, vacated the building about 20 years ago.
It was last occupied by the restaurant Seafood and Tacos Raul which closed in December.
The Downey Conservancy has multiple, on-going efforts to try and save the building, including the possibility of relocating the structure to a nearby area for tourism services.
Another strategy is to get the site named a local landmark, just as the oldest operating McDonald’s has been designated in another part of the city.
The group contacted the Taco Bell corporation which doesn’t own the building but is reportedly looking into the mat
