CANADA: ARTIST DRAWS PORTRAITS OF MISSING ABORIGINAL WOMEN
Part-time illustrator Evan Munday has been sketching and inking portraits of Canada`s missing and murdered aboriginal women and posting one per day to Twitter, to raise awareness of the issue and how recent statistics show that indigenous women are four times more likely to be murdered than non-indigenous women. His sketches have been met with mixed reactions online.
While many approve of his project, saying it`s raising public awareness and drawing greater media attention to a serious problem, not all social networkers are quite so in favour. The people who posted these tweets for example say the project is disrespectful to the victims’ families.
In view of the criticism, Evan Munday has since decided to discontinue the portrait series, and is now encouraging web users to donate money to the “It starts with us” site; a community run database set up to honour the lives of missing and murdered aboriginal women.
And although the portrait project has ended, a growing number of Canadians and organizations are lobbying the government to take real action on violence against indigenous women. In a recent report, the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights for example has added its voice to those who are calling for a nationwide inquiry, urging the appropriate authorities to address the root causes of discrimination and social and economic marginalization.
