Duke University has cancelled its plans for traditional Muslim call to prayer from the university's chapel tower.

Duke University has abruptly reversed its decision allowing their Muslim students to conduct the traditional Islamic call to prayer from on top of the campus’s 210-foot chapel tower.

Instead, it will be held on the grounds in front of the building.

Michael Schoenfeld, Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations, has said that the reversa was in response to a “serious and credible security” threat, though he did not reveal any specifics.

The initial announcement that Muslims would use the chapel tower in such a way provoked a strong reaction.

A conservative foundation argued that it was religious favoritism while evangelist Franklin Graham labeled it the marginalization of Christians.

Students, on the other hand, seemed to feel comfortable with the school’s original plan.

Schoenfeld denies that mounting outside pressure led to the reversal.
