The Beagle 2, a British lander that went missing on Christmas of 2003 while en route to Mars, may have recently been located.

NASA’s HiRise space camera has possibly caught sight of the craft, and it appears that it did make it to the Red Planet’s surface.

That’s according to an unnamed space scientist who spoke on the matter with The Guardian.

The news has yet to be confirmed by the UK Space Agency, but it does line up with prevailing theories on The Beagle 2’s fate.

Back on December 19th of 2003, the lander was released from its mothership but failed to sound a landing signal, a song written by a British pop band, days later.

As its launch went as planned, it’s been considered likely that it was rendered inoperable upon making surface contact.

That belief is shared by a scientist who works on the NASA HiRise team.
