Bullied Fish Gets Prosthetic Eye To Stop Bullying

A fish at the Vancouver Aquarium has received a prosthetic eye after in-house vets noticed it was being bullied because of its missing eye.

Humans and fish don’t seem to have much in common, but there’s one bad behavior both seem to exhibit in enclosed quarters--bullying.

A one-eyed copper rockfish was being picked on by his tank-mates so veterinarians at the Vancouver Aquarium gave it a fake eye to stop the harassing behavior.

It had lost one of its eyes due to cataracts two years ago.

As a result, the fish exhibited less energy and a poor appearance.

The kind of opportunistic behavior it experienced, including having food stolen from its blind side, is a typical way for animals to take advantage of others’ weaknesses and secure the best resources for themselves.

The surgery to correct this perceived disability involved putting the fish under anesthesia and attaching a prosthetic eye to the empty socket.
