Seismologists are using the massive vibrations caused by Seattle Seahawks’ stadium fans to test earthquake detection systems and communications with the public.
Seismologists will be keeping a close eye on the Seahawks-Panthers playoff game on Saturday and not just to see who wins the office pool.
A team from the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network has been using home games at CenturyLink Field in Seattle to study earthquake detection.
They began focusing on football games after a crowd frenzy appeared as seismic activity in 2011.
The massive vibration caused after the sudden, game-winning touchdown by Seattle player Marshawn Lynch coined the term “Beast Quake.”
The group decided to take advantage of this shaking activity by installing seismographs directly in the stadium in 2014.
Targeted goals included learning more about vibrations among a crowd and their impact on a large structure such as a stadium.
This year, scientists plan to focus on communications to and with the public
