This video lecture from Group IIIA and Group IVA Elements (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers chemical properties of Borax. The solution of Borax ionizes to sodium ion and tetraborate ions which react with water to form orthoboric acid and sodium hydroxide. The solution is hence basic. Borax reacts with hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid to form boric acid and respective salt. Heat decomposes decahydrated borax to orthoboric acid, metaboric acid and boric anhydride.
