On an official visit to Washington, D.C., Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Tuesday (January 6).

The solemn ceremony took place at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from the U.S. capital city.

Earlier in the day, Pena Nieto met with U.S. President Barack Obama, where the two discussed economic, security and social issues including drug cartel violence and the 43 missing teaching students from Iguala.

During the one-day visit, the Mexican president is also expected to attend economic meetings with U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden.

It is Pena Nieto's first visit to the U.S. since November 2012, when he was president-elect. The visit follows Obama's trips to Mexico in February 2014 and May 2013.
