A 91-year-old man is on a mission to raise funds to get an old battleship back to Normandy. Ernie Andrus is a World War II vet, as he was an active Navy member during the D-Day invasion.

He hopes that by running across the United States, from one coast to the other, he’ll be able to raise enough money to send the decommissioned tank landing ship to France for the D-Day plus 75 celebration.

It isn’t all about funds, however. Andrus also wants to educate people on the battle itself.

He explained “You want people to know what the war was all about, and what it took to win it… This shouldn't be forgotten. Eisenhower and Churchill both made a similar remark that it's the ship that won the war.”

Andrus is in the midst of his journey, which started in San Diego and he typically runs three days out of each week, averaging about 5 miles daily.

He often catches a ride back to his car and two days later he runs yet another 5 miles. He hopes to reach the East Coast by the time he’s 93 or 94 years of age.
