Transporting a large animal always involves a serious level of risk. Many people around the world were heartbroken when a hippo in Taiwan was left injured after jumping from a moving truck on Friday.
Sadly, the hippopotamus which was reportedly 18 years old wasn’t able to recover, and subsequently passed away as a result.
Upon leaping from the truck, he reportedly struck a parked vehicle and was left lying in the road. Just hours later, he fell yet again when a cable broke inside a freight container as he was being moved into a pond.
The Taipei Zoo has since released the hippo’s autopsy report stating he suffered from a torn diaphragm that caused his lungs to collapse.
According to Taiwanese officials, the owner of the hippo may be facing a fine of more than 2 thousand dollars for going against animal protection laws. This isn’t the first tragic animal transporting mishap that occurred in recent times.
Earlier this year, a giraffe in an open-air trailer hit its head on a highway bridge in South Africa. The animal later passed away from its injuries.
