Mélanie Gouby, a young French journalist, spent nearly two years in eastern DR Congo following the brave rangers of Virunga, Africa's oldest natural park and a UNESCO world heritage site. The rangers' mission is to save some of the world's very last mountain gorillas from a man-made extinction.

The gorillas, and the men fighting to save them, are the heroes of a gripping new documentary film, entitled "Virunga". The film, distributed online by the internet streaming service Netflix, features Gouby's investigative reporting and is seen as a serious contender in the Oscar race. It may also have helped to turn the tide in the gorillas' favour - at least for now. Soco International, a British company that wanted to explore for oil right under the gorillas' home in DR Congo, appears to have bowed to pressure and dropped its plans.
Mélanie Gouby tells FRANCE 24's Douglas Herbert more about the film.
