The Census Bureau notes that Florida added 803 new residents each day on average between July 1st, 2013 and July 1st, 2014.
Overall, its population increased by 293,000 in those 12 months whereas New York's increased by 51,000.
Sean Snaith, an economist from University of Central Florida is quoted as saying: "Florida's economy has recovered at a faster pace than the national economy. There are more opportunities for economic migrants coming to Florida and finding work, whereas four years ago that wasn't the case."
The most populous states are California with over 38 million people, followed by Texas with just under 27 million.
Change in population sizes can have many consequences including how many seats in Congress each state holds.
In 2010, New York lost two in the House of Representatives, while Florida gained two district seats.
