Volvo is working on a bicycle helmet that will hopefully make cycling safer and potentially save the lives of riders.

The carmaker has collaborated with Ericsson and sports gear manufacturer POC to create the smart helmet. The aim of the technology is to connect cyclists and motorists.

The helmet works with the app called Strava to share a cyclist’s location. That information is then placed into the Volvo cloud which vehicles equipped with their City Safety system can access.

That way, when a bike is in close proximity to a vehicle, a warning will be sent to the driver. The best part about it is that the bicycle can be out of sight, so the driver has plenty of time to decrease his or her speed and be on the lookout for the cyclist.

It isn’t just car owners, however, who get a notification. The system will also tell riders if there is an auto nearby so they can take the proper precautions.

The driver will receive what is called a ‘head-up display alert’ while the cyclist is going to receive their warning via a ‘helmet-mounted alert light’

The CEO and Founder of POC commented “Our mission is to do the best we can to possibly save lives and to reduce the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes and cyclists.”
