If you won a million dollars, how long would you wait to cash in on it? Probably not as long as Aaron Monsey, who redeemed his prize money nearly 6 months later.
If you won a $1 million, how long would you wait? Probably not as long as Aaron Monsey, who redeemed his prize money nearly 6 months later.
The seemingly strange thing about the situation is that he knew the ticket was worth the large sum of money for some time. He didn’t forget about it or lose it.
He simply wasn’t in a rush to collect his money. The ticket was purchased at an Exxon gas station in advance of the June 21st Powerball drawing.
Five numbers on the ticket matched. The only pick missed was the one that would have bumped his winnings to 60 million.
A few days after the drawing, Monsey checked his ticket and realized he had won. Even then, he just went about his daily routine and continued going to work as a carpenter.
According to state law, Virginia tickets expire 180 days after the drawing is held and Monsey waited until one week before the deadline to claim his prize.
As for why he held onto it for so long, Monsey said the million dollars just isn’t enough to retire on.
