People lay flowers in Sydney to remember the victims killed in a downtown cafe siege.

The stand off ended when police stormed the building to free hostages being held at gunpoint, leaving three dead - including the gunman.

A 34 year old cafe manager and a 38 year old woman, who was a mother and a lawyer, were killed in a dramatic end to the 16-hour siege.

As Australia comes to terms with the events, police plan to launch an investigation into whether the two were killed by the gunman, or in police crossfire.
