Show of the Week ponders open-world racer The Crew, in which the entire continental United States has been squeezed and compressed into a driveable sandbox, filled with other players driving their own disgustingly decorated rides.
The world of The Crew isn't just huge, but it's insanely detailed too. Los Angeles looks like Los Angeles, Miami looks like Miami and Roswell New Mexico looks like a town still dining out on a 1940s UFO myth. At the same time, this isn't your granddad's racing game; a bit like Destiny, it's always online and adds mechanics traditionally associated with MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft.
The Crew wasn't the first to hybridise the RPG and the racing game, though. Consider the varying successes of five CarPGs which attempted the sub-genre, including the PC's Need For Speed World and Road Trip Adventure on PS2.
