Many communities in Germany and throughout Europe have open-air Christmas markets in the Advent season. They became a custom in the first half of the 20th century. Among the most renowned are Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt and Dresden's Striezelmarkt. German-style Christmas markets have been adopted in other countries -- especially in Britain.
