Surveying the damage left by Typhoon Hagupit on the eastern island of Samar...

One resident here says homes were flattened like folded paper. Officials estimate 13,000 dwellings were crushed by the typhoon.

The government death toll for Samar island stands at eight, although the Red Cross says at least 22 were killed...most victims washed away in floods or hit by fallen trees.

Coastal villages on the island were the hardest hit, and workers in Manila are responding as quickly as possible, assembling relief goods to help those affected.

Emergency officials are assuring the country that there are enough supplies for the nearly two million refugees, evacuated out of caution after last year's Typhoon Haiyan left more than 7,000 dead or missing.

Now, refugees are gradually returning home, to see what - if anything - is left.
