Ukraine's government says a problem has occured at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in the country's south-east.

The accident, reportedly caused by a short circuit, has reduced the country's power supply, worsening an already serious power shortage brought about by months of fighting between the government and Russian separatists

But Ukraine's Energy Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn insists the malfunction does not pose a threat to public safety:

"I repeat one more time there is no danger."

Demchyshyn says the plant should be fully operational by Friday.

He denies there are problems with the reactor:

"(JOURNALIST ASKING OFF CAMERA "WAS THERE ANY RADIATION LEAK?") There are no problems with the reactor. It is not connected to the reactor at all. Zero connection. Forget it."
