A mother is using social media to help her deceased son travel all around the world. CJ Twomey, from Maine was a former US air force member, who committed suicide in April of 2010. He was only 20 years old.
About a year ago, his mom, Hallie Twomey, looked at his urn on the mantelpiece and made a realization. She explained, “It dawned on me that his ashes would be sitting in that urn forever. He didn't get to see the world and I wanted to give CJ something he didn't get a chance to have.”
She talked with her husband John and decided to open a Facebook account dedicated to the scattering of her son’s ashes. Through the social media site, she asked if anybody would be willing to sprinkle the ashes in the destination of their choice.
At first, a small number of people offered to spread the ashes but as time went on, more and more individuals have come forward. A year after opening the account, 9,000 good-hearted people have asked to take CJ’s ashes along with them during their travels.
Thus far, his ashes have been spread in over 100 countries on all seven continents and have even gone into space.
