Darren Wilson has resigned from the Ferguson police department.

The officer who shot dead unarmed black teen Michael Brown, told reporters in St Louis that resigning was the hardest thing he’d ever had to do.

He said he hoped his decision would allow the community to heal.

In Ferguson protests against the grand jury’s decision not to indict Wilson continued into the weekend.

Although Wilson was not charged, the US justice department is still conducting a civil rights investigation into the shooting as well as an inquiry into the Ferguson police department’s practices.
