USA: ANONYMOUS TAKES ON THE KU KLUX KLAN
Members of US white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan have come under attack from Anonymous over the past few days. The informal hacker group launched a virtual assault, declaring “cyber warfare” against the KKK after the extremist group threatened to use lethal force against protesters in Ferguson, in the State of Missouri, as the area awaits an imminent court decision over the killing of an unarmed black 18-year-old, shot dead by a white police officer on August 9.
Anonymous has explained the motivation behind the so called “Op KKK” in an online video. In the clip, viewed over 30 000 times in 24 hours, the hacktivists say “We are not attacking you because of what you believe in as we fight for freedom of speech…we are attacking you because of what you did to our brothers and sisters at the Ferguson protest on 12 November”. Anonymous also promises it will do everything in its power to prevent the racist group from running online propaganda, and will be revealing the identity of members of the hate group.
And the hacker group has already taken action, taking over the official Ku Klux Klan Twitter page on Sunday, and controlling it ever since, posting messages and photos taunting and attacking the far right group. And this is just the beginning of the online war on the KKK, Anonymous has posted a list of all the sites affiliated to the extremist movement to the “pastebin” platform, urging urgent cyber-attacks.
