French police say Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has been hospitalised in the Alpine city of Grenoble.

There were no details given about why he has been admitted to hospital.

Algerian authorities were not immediately available for comment.

Bouteflika suffered a stroke last year and has rarely been seen in public since.

He appeared frail at the beginning of this month when Algeria marked the 60th anniversary of its war of independence with France.
