This was written while I was a member of the
U.S. Air Forces, in 1944- a totally true tale.

My departure for the Air Force,
Bade me leave my girlfriend, Ann.
Our romance was on even keel,
But devoid a future plan.

Love letters came to camp each day,
Lending courage to go on.
Then, nothing for a while, until
There was one addressed, 'Dear John'.

''Dear John', Bill has returned to me,
From his duties, overseas.
We are resuming our affair,
So, forget about me, please'.

I showed my chaplain this sad note
And said to him 'I grieve'.
They checked my records, which were good,
And my C.O. gave me leave.

Back home I called at Annie's house,
Met her mother, at the door;
She said'they're getting married soon,
Don't come knocking any more'.

The stars of Heaven guided me,
Sending comfort, from above,
As I watched the dying embers
Of this unrequited love.

Then, I bought myself a Harley
And had Texas in my sight,
For my leave was nearly over-
Had to be there Sunday night.
