Start with zero symbols,
then fall off the edge of the room
like an olympic diver yawning backwards
gathering imagery from air.
Make all words three-dimensional,
tie-dye them with rings of color,
chisel the letters from soft wood,
use them like flat stones
to send skittering across the still pond,
or use them to fix a lover’s image in your memory,
let her chance upon them on a shelf
instead of handing them to her.
