Their heart was hardened. Did they not know
He was their Creator, who from five loaves
Fed five thousand men [and women and children too! ]
[One loaf sufficed for more than a thousand] who
Ate the barley bread, which though three days old,
Was yet crisp and warm, fresh from the oven?
Did they not know this was bread from heaven?

And what kind of fish was this?
Sweet enough to kiss!
[And savour! ]
Where did it get this flavour?
Oh, such satisfaction among the multitude
Replete with delicious heavenly food!
They were filled with wonder,
[Forgotten their former pangs of hunger],
Belly-full with bliss,
This was manna from heaven, this
Was a miracle beyond imagination,
The perfect miracle of satiation!

And they wanted to make him king
Of Galilee, Judea and Palestine;
They knew nothing of heaven; they were so blind.
Did they not see the broken bread
[And the blood shed
From Calvary, sweet as wine]?
The oil that made their faces shine?
Oh, such hardness in their heart.
They simply could not grasp the story
Of the Cross and its abundant resurrection glory.
