it’s funny you should ask
a question so atypically blunt of you
because I also have been thinking about it
for a string of months on end
since the day I last felt the warmth –
that comfortable, fragrant, sensual warmth –
of your electric torso
bound so tightly to my own
by our magnetic arms
pools of briny tears puddled in
the creases of my face
and your muted eyes,
downcast and subdued,
ignored my earnest glances
that begged for just one last sign
of whatever nondescript affections
you harbored for me
and I know they were there
but why did you not ask me until now?
the same idea has been stewing
in the nooks and crannies of my mind
amid the clutter of quirks and neuroses
I can’t bear to let go
your motive perplexes me
an innocent hypothesis?
an indecent proposal?
I have no practical experience
in matters as sensitive as these
so I knit my eyebrows
and convince myself that you meant
what I’d love for you to have meant
and in that case,
my answer is yes
