ONLINE CAMPAIGN TO FREE BRITISH-IRANIAN WOMAN JAILED IN IRAN
British Iranian woman Ghoncheh Ghavami has been sentenced to one year in prison for attending a volleyball game in Iran. the 25 year old student was arrested back in June for attempting to watch the men’s national team play Italy … women are banned from attending male only matches in Iran. Her sentence has been met with widespread condemnation online as thousands of web users have been campaigning of her release for months.
People from all over the world have been campaigning for Ghoncheh Ghavami since she was arrested over the summer. This online petition calling for her immediate release was started by her brother Iman and garnered over 710 000 signatures worldwide. Web users have also shown their support via this Facebook page for the jailed student, which has around 25 000 likes.
But the Iranian authorities have handed out this one year prison term to Ghoncheh Ghavami, despite the strong online mobilization. In a statement on its website, Amnesty International voices outrage over the sentencing, saying she is a prisoner of conscience, punished for simply calling for equality. The NGO is demanding her immediate and unconditional release. Social networkers are doing the same, and are busy campaigning under the #freeghoncheh hashtag.
