Police and paramilitary soldiers in Indian-controlled Kashmir used batons and fired tear gas on Sunday to disperse a group of Muslims participating in a religious procession.
Authorities imposed a curfew in parts of Srinagar, the region’s main city, to prevent gatherings marking Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, from developing into anti-India protests.
Scuffles erupted when police and paramilitary forces tried to stop the marchers who were chanting religious slogans. Many were detained and taken away by police.
