Argentina’s President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has been admitted to hospital in Buenos Aires with what’s been described as an infectious fever”.
Only last month the 61-year-old, who is in her second term as president, took several days off with a sore throat. This latest bout of ill health also follows brain surgery a year ago.
Kirchner is the widow of former President Néstor Kirchner and was first elected president in October 2007, becoming Argentina’s first elected female president.
She won re-election in October 2011 with 54.1 percent of the vote. She will not be able to run in next year’s election due to a constitutional limit that allows only two consecutive terms.
