A major power outage plunged millions in Bangladesh into darkness Saturday -- even the prime minister's official residence.

Local media reports say it was caused by the failure of a transmission power line, which transports electricity from India.

Generators kicked in at the airport and main hospital of the capital, Dhaka, but scores of businesses struggled without power.

Officials have given mixed signals about when power may be restored.
