For the past 29 years, Oct. 31 has been the day when India commemorates the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the country’s first female prime minister who was shot by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984. This year though, on the 30th anniversary of her assassination, when you might have expected the commemorations to be particularly full-bodied, the specter of Mrs. Gandhi appeared diminished. In her place, politicians from the newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party and the media have installed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, another much-less talked about Congress party leader, who was born on Oct. 31. 1875. A close confidant of Mahatma Gandhi, also known as the “iron man of India,” Mr. Patel served as India’s first home minister.
