VIDEO SHOWS WHAT STREET HARASSMENT IS LIKE
American non-profit “Hollaback” has chosen to highlight the problem of women being verbally or physically harassed on the streets of New York City with a video that shows what street harassment is actually like. An actress was captured on a hidden camera, as she walked through the city`s streets, being catcalled and receiving unsolicited and sexist comments from men. The video was posted online and has since gone viral, drawing lively commentary from web users.
Scores of women have taken to social networks to share their outrage, slamming the lack of respect shown by some men and sharing their own stories of street harassment; a problem many women in the US are forced to face on a daily basis. An alarming situation most web users say can only be resolved by creating greater collective awareness.
This isn`t the first time a shocking reminder of the prevalence of street harassment has been so widely discussed online. Back in July 2012, Belgian film student Sofie Peeters produced a video, also a hidden camera film, to denounce the sexist insults she encountered almost every time she left her front door. Her video stirred up something of a political and social storm in Belgium at the time, prompting the government to adopt legislation to crack down on this type of behaviour. Offenders are now liable to a 1000 euros fine or up to one year in prison.
