Judgement Day

It was a cold and dark December night
I received a call, they said I might
Go quickly now which clearly meant
Her few last hours her time was spent

She was a Christian wife
Who firmly believed in the afterlife
I remember hoping through the night
Since I was faithless, that she was right

To her, her God would light the way
And show the path on judgement day

Through my sadness, I had to smile
As I remembered as a child
Her on her knees always outside
Scrubbing steps yet full of pride

You could say she had no pedigree
But she was blessed with dignity
Matriarchal, yes but full of love
She took her strength from God above

For her, her God would light the way
And show the path on judgement day

Then finally in the early morn
She passed away before the dawn
Its years ago and I still have guilt
I didn’t learn from the faith she built

I hope that truth sees my last breath
And there’s more to life than only death
Religion’s there but I still abstain
And faithless still I will remain
