UN overwhelmingly votes to urge end to U.S. embargo on Cuba

On a highway in Cuba, a not-so-subtle reminder of a tumultuous relationship.

The signs reads in Spanish 'The blockade is the largest genocide in history.'

It's referring to the decades-long U.S. economic embargo against Cuba, which the U.N. General Assembly condemned on Tuesday for the 23rd time.

Residents on the streets of Havana support the resolution.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) SINGER IGNACIO MONTENEGRO SAYING:

"Now is the time, right now, for this blockade to end so the Cuban people can be happy and so the whole world can bring to our country what we are lacking."

Washington broke diplomatic ties with Cuba and imposed the embargo during the Cold War.

The UN resolution has become an annual ritual with only the U.S. and Israel in opposition.
