A man who identifies himself as British hostage John Cantlie appears in new footage posted online by Islamic State.
Reuters cannot independently verify the video posted on social media, nor when it was recorded.
Cantlie was captured in northern Syria in November 2012.
He says he's in the Syrian border town of Kobani, where the U.S. is leading air strikes against militants to reinforce Kurdish fighters on the ground.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) BRITISH HOSTAGE, JOHN CANTLIE, SAYING:
"We are here in the heart of the so-called PKK safe zone which is now controlled entirely by the Islamic State. Now the Western media and I can't see any of their journalists here in the city of Kobani have been saying recently that Islamic State are on the retreat."
Islamic State fighters have been trying to capture Kobani for over a month to consolidate land along the Turkish border.
